COVID-19: Peace corps urge Nigerians to adopt conscious protective measures

The National Commandant of Peace Corps of Nigeria (PCN), Mr Diskson Akoh, has enjoined Nigerians to adopt conscious measures to protect themselves against the Coronavirus disease (COVID-19).

Akoh gave the advice in an interactive session on Tuesday in Abuja as the Federal Government commenced gradual easing of the lockdown.

He noted that no government could sustain the lockdown for long because of its negative impact on the economy.

He, therefore, appealed to citizens to be more patient and understanding and to support government’s efforts, adding that adjusting to social change was a gradual process.

Akoh also called on the National Orientation Agency (NOA) to champion awareness campaign about the pandemic in addition to what the Presidential Task Force (PTF) on COVID-19 was already doing.

He reiterated the need for NOA to educate Nigerians about the risk factors associated with the disease to enable them to observe preventive measures.

He also urged the Federal Government to include the youths in its efforts to stem the spread of the disease, noting that youths constituted majority of the nation’s population.

According to Akoh, Peace Corps of Nigeria and Man O War are examples of many youth organisations that are playing vital roles in the fight against the pandemic.

“If you go across various states in Nigeria, you will see the true spirit of volunteerism being displayed by the officers of peace corps.

“This is without support from any arm of government, apart from the Cross River State Government that donated a brand new truck to enhance peace corps operation,” Akor said.
